Cheraw Native Publishes First Novel
Hal Duvall, a retired Cheraw merchant who spent much of his life running Cheraw Hardware & Supply Co., has published his first novel, Juniper Road.
The story begins in 1935 in a small rural Southern town still in the grip of the Great Depression. Fourteen year-old Woodrow Wilson Jones lies about his age in order to join a crew of axmen. Wilson’s colored neighbor and friend, Simeon Bates, is part of the crew, also.
The book discusses the problems of poverty in the segregated South. In his detailed description of life in a bygone era, the author’s memorable characters depict the stark realities of the Great Depression.
Juniper Road is available at Wannamaker Drug and other local merchants.
